You can turn wine into water!

We're celebrating Earth Week and our 21st birthday!
Sunday April 21-Sunday April 28 (Earth Week):
Celebrations are more fun when more people are involved, right? Bring your friends and have dinner with us throughout the week of our birthday. For every bottle of wine purchased, we will donate $20 to charity: water. Your one table of friends will do a world of good because your bottle of wine turns into a 20 year supply of water!

Celebrate Earth Week and our 21st Birthday by helping others!

click for more info...

Traditionally, the 21st birthday is about celebrating the opportunity to enjoy a drink legally. And here in St. Louis, with so many great bars and restaurants, access to a drink is not an issue. But in many parts of the world a drink of anything is difficult to come by, especially clean drinking water.
That’s why we have decided to pledge our 21st birthday to our adopted charity, charity:water , a non-profit organization dedicated to providing clean drinking water to developing nations. It only takes $20 to provide clean drinking water for one person for 20 years, and we need your help to do it.
Come celebrate our birthday and help turn wine into water!
Sunday April 21-Sunday April 28 (Earth Week):Celebrations are more fun when more people are involved, right? Bring your friends and have dinner with us throughout the week of our birthday. For every bottle of wine purchased, we will donate $20 to charity: water. Your one table of friends will do a world of good because your bottle of wine turns into a 20 year supply of water!
Sunday April 28th (our birthday):We’re ringing in our 21st birthday with atwo courses for $17 brunch bash from 10am-2pm. Our main man Tommy Halloran will be playing live music from 11am-1pm. When you order a mimosa with your two course brunch, we’ll donate 20% of the total to charity:water. Once again, just by celebrating with us and having a drink, you’re providing a drink to someone else!
And as always, you can drop your loose change into the wine bottle by our front door. Since 2009, for every quarter you donate, we’ve matched it with a nickel. Together we have collected enough money for 148 people to enjoy a clean drink of water for 20 years. That’s not chump change.
Make your reservation for the week now!

We love our Webster Groves neighborhood!

The Gut Check blog on the Riverfront Times web site did a quick recap of great places in our neck of the woods. Here's what they said about Big Sky Cafe:
"...Big Sky Cafe, sister restaurant to Clayton's beloved Remy's Kitchen & Wine Bar, committed to green practices before it was cool to do so, all the way back in 1992. But even today, it remains aligned with growers in Missouri and Illinois who share their bounty of fresh meat and cheeses and produce, all while maintaining an herb garden of its own..."
We're sourrounded by some awesome neighbors! Get the full run down here.

Here's what they said: UrbanSpoon edition

Katrina from St. Louis had this to say on UrbanSpoon about her recent visit to us:
"This place is so charming. The food is amazing! We had the mussels, the cheese plate ( great value and amazing), étouffée (pretty spicy but so yummy), beet salad (packed with flavor) and the Mac n cheese (what an indulgence). Oh, don't forget the caramel apple pecan pie- wow! We love this place! Friday nights they have great music too. This was a great date night place!"
Looks like Katrina picked several of our classic dishes. When you go out to eat, do you pick your favorites each time, or do you like to mix it up with specials too?

World Water Day: March 22nd

There is a world water crisis. As populations increase, there is a growing need for more water and less sources to give it. You may be familiar with water programs such as charity:water, our adopted charity, that provides clean drinking water to developing nations such as Haiti, Ethiopia, and India. Not that we’re safe here in the Midwest. Just in the last few years alone, we’ve seen record breaking floods and droughts that affect everything from wildlife, to farmers, to sanitation. That’s why we’re ready to do our part, and we’re hoping you are too.In order to conserve the earth's natural resources, we serve water by request only. Please don’t hesitate to ask if water is your beverage of choice.
What will you do to help conserve water?

How you can help a water crisis

With all the rain and snow we're having, it may seem like there is plenty of water to go around. But in reality, the lack of water for drinking, farming, and sanitation is a global issue. Not only do we support organizations like charity:water, but we support local ventures too. This week, come to the screening of the Robert Redford film Watershed at the Old Orchard Gallery to learn more about the issue and what you can do to help. All proceeds will be donated to the Redford Watershed project to help create awareness.

Our Rosemary & Red Wine Pot Roast will warm your soul!

There is a definite autumn chill in the air and this season calls for one thing: fabulous comfort food! Sidney Lewis of the Ladue News recently visited us and had this to say about the customer favorite dish:
"Now, ‘comfort food’ is a moniker we've had just about enough of, but if any dish does it justice, it's Big Sky's Rosemary & Red Wine Braised Pot Roast ($18). Tender grass-fed chuck roast braised in red wine with rosemary, carrots and onions, served on a creamy bed of garlic mashed potatoes? Yes, please! Most assuredly, a dish that brings the diner back to Mom's table."

"Food should be good for you" is what artist Kimber Mallett says in her newest creations now available for purchase at Big Sky Cafe. You may recognize her name as the better half of owner Tim Mallett, but you may also recognize her art throughout the restaurant over the years. These posters are her newest creations to reflect the personality and style of Big Sky Cafe: locally sourced, naturally raised
The posters range from $10-15 and can be seen and purchased at the restaurant.

"Chef Colleen Clawson takes Big Sky Cafe’s tagline of “revitalized American comforts – locally sourced and naturally raised” to heart when she prepares the Big Sky Grilled Cheese, an adult version of one of my favorite childhood comfort foods."

Market Season is Here!

It's the day we've been looking forward to - the opening of the Webster Groves Farmers Market! According to AgriMissouri, this week you can expect to see strawberries, lettuces (a wide variety), radishes, squash, carrots, and more.
And since local, seasonal and sustainable products are an important part of Chef Colleen's menu choices, it was only natural for her to agree to do the first cooking demonstration for the year! Other activities include live music, a craft for the kiddos, and special exhibits featuring recycling and painting. Get the details here.
After the market, stop on in for a cocktail on the patio (hello warm weather!) or a bite to eat. Our menus always reflect what spring goodies are available! Please note: the Murdoch Bridge at I-44 is now closed and will be for the next several months. When coming our way from I-44, we suggest taking the Elm exit. For more info and alternate routes, check out the map here.

Everyday is Earth Day at Big Sky Cafe

Focusing on local, seasonal and sustainable products daily is important to us. Each day, the Big Sky staff and Chef Colleen make choices for the restaurant based on what is good for the environment. Just some of the things we do include:

Our seafood selections are sustainable
We recycle all glass, paper, cardboard, metal & plastics through Allied Waste single stream services
Vegetable oils are re-vitalized at Kelley Green Bio-Fuel
We support clean renewable energy as a Platinum Member of Pure Power at AmerenUE with 20% of our electrical energy provided by clean & sustainable resources
We compost all organic waste through Blue Skies Recycling

Through Blue Skies Recycling, we've been able to decrease our solid waste tremendously. The items that we've struggled with in the past such as bones, waxed milk containers, coffee grounds, plate scrapings, meat, poultry and fish, can now be diverted from a landfill and into a compost pile that will be ready to use in only 120 days.Which is why we are proud to be a part of the All About Business program "St. Louis Goes Green: Sponsored by Blue Skies Recycling" airing this Sunday (Earth Day) April 22nd at 9 am on KPLR 11. Set your DVRs!Here's to making every day Earth Day - happy day to all!

Have you tried the Salmon Burger yet?
Chef Colleen tried several different recipes to get this Salmon Burger at just the right consistency and flavor (no mushy or crumbly "burger" here). But the real key to making it so great is the quality of the salmon itself. Loch Duart Salmon is not only sustainable and raised in an environmentally safe way, but the taste is excellent too.
Here's what's on the menu this week:
Loch Duart Smoked Salmon Burger w/ smoked tomato tartar and kale chips 10.90Roasted Chicken Caesar Salad w/ local naturally raised chicken, red onion, crispy bacon & parmesan crisps 8.50 Pan Roasted Troutdale Farms Rainbow Trout fresh spinach, grape tomatoes, crumbled Heartland goat cheese & smoked Anjou pear-sherry vinaigrette 11.90
